Pázmaň, Peter

The archbishop of Esztergom, cardinal and founder of Trnava University. He was born to the family of Calvinist nobleman and Catholic mother. He studied at a Jesuit secondary grammar school in Cluj-Napoca, since he converted to the Catholic faith already as a young man. In 1587, he joined the Jesuits. He acquired his education in Rome and Graz. At the beginning of the 17th century, he joined a Jesuit mission held in the territory of Slovakia, Šaľa. He is also famous for his conversion of Mikuláš Esterházy to the Catholic faith. As a commissioner of the archbishop František Forgáč, he performed his re-Catholisation activity successfully, and thanks to this fact he was appointed the archbishop of Esztergom with a seat in Trnava. Peter Pázmaň crowned Ferdinand II Hungarian king in Bratislava. In 1623, he founded the Pasmaneum in Vienna - dormitory and school for poor students of theology. In 1635, Pázmaň established a university in Trnava which became a centre of education of the then Kingdom of Hungary. In the same year, he had the relics of Saint Martyrs from Košice brought to Trnava and buried them in a Jesuit church. He participated also in the construction of the university church in Trnava, today, St. John the Baptist Cathedral. In 1637, he died in Bratislava, where he is also buried.
