Fándly's Apple Tree (Naháč)

The protected Malus domestica grows in Naháč, in the front garden of local elementary school. It became a protected tree in 2002. From the point of view of genetics, this exceptionally significant tree is unique within the whole Slovakia. Is is connected with work of Juraj Fándly, outstanding Slovak priest and writer, who described it also in his text Pilní domajší a poľní hospodár. It represents a so-called mutant whose blossom does not have petals or stamens. Its blossoms are not striking, even insect pollinators do not find them attractive. Properties of tree are not transmitted to its posterity by a seed, however, only by vegetative means of reproduction. Until the half of the previous century, an apple tree, which was reproduced by grafting and planted to the elementary school garden in Naháč, was preserved in the municipality. There grow another three eleven-year old exemplars of apple tree in the yard and garden of former presbytery, today's museum and memorial room of Juraj Fándly. The tree of a height of 10 m is 45 years old.
