Záruby (Hill)

The highest hill of the Little Carpathians and its immediate surroundings represent the national nature reserve established in 1984 covering an area of 299.99 ha. The subject of its protection are forest communities illustrating their zonation and variedness within the Little Carpathians. A colourful mosaic of forest communities of submontane and montane altitudinal vegetation zone is connected to a characteristic karst relief located on the mountain ridge. They are interlaced by rock structures, karst valleys and plenty of protected and rare species of plants and animals. From the point of view of flora, especially the area around ruins of Ostrý Kameň Castle, westwards from the Záruby Hill, shows high variety. The territory of national nature reserve is situated at the highest altitudes of the Little Carpathians (767 m), on the boundary between the cadastral areas Buková a Smolenice. There is a big wooden two-barred cross at the rocky peak of Záruby. A circle view from the peak is partially obstructed by a forest cover. The peak is frequently visited by citizens of Trnava and surrounding municipalities and represents also the collective goal of tourist ascents.
