Trnava Fish Ponds (Trnava, Hrnčiarovce nad Parnou)

The protected site Trnava Fish Ponds represents a remarkable locality situated on the mutual boundary of cadastral areas of Trnava and Hrnčiarovca nad Parnou. It is a significant type of water and swamp biotope located on Trnava Hilly Land, greatly affecting composition of animal species, especially birds of this region. Although the first reference about this locality comes from the 16th century, the whole pond system was completed only in 1955 and 1956. The surroundings of ponds are covered by remnants of bottomland forest. Natural beauty of Trnava Fish Ponds is very diverse. Variedness of flora and character of territory influence also great diversity of fauna species of this area. Birds, mainly from the point of view of their occurrence and nesting, deserve the highest attention. The site of fish ponds includes as many as 150 protected bird species, what represents almost 80 % from the total number of known species living in this territory. The protected site Trnava Fish Ponds extends within an area of more than 38 ha. The fish pond system serves also as a study area of Považie migration line of waterbirds. Such precious species as Common Pochard, Tufted Duck, Peregrine Falcon, Woodchat Shrike, Spotted Crake and others nest here. The territory was established a protected site in 1974. The recreation area Kamenný mlyn can be found in the vicinity of the protected site.
