The Scourge of Trnava

In August 1683, the leader of the anti-Habsburg uprising and a Turkish ally Imre Thököly pulled into Trnava with his army. When people of Trnava welcomed him with a cannon salvo, bricks from the Upper gate tower loosened and fell down near Thököly’s horse. He did not utter a word after this incident, but obviously, it was not a good sign. The day after his visit, barns in front of the Upper gate caught fire. The fire quickly spread to the town walls and soon almost the entire town was in flames. As the gates were locked and barricaded and many villagers in fear of the Turks moved inside the town walls, a panic broke out. People crawled up the walls and jumped off. More than 4,000 people died that day. The fire spared only 58 houses and parish and university churches. Thököly's soldiers ransacked the city archives and stole a gold seal from the Béla IV charter.
