The Raven Rock

At the beginning of the 18th century, the Raven Rock and the nearby Smolenice castle were witnesses of great love. The country at that time was torn in a furious struggle between imperial and Rákóczi’s army. One of the most important rebel commanders was Ladislav Ocskay. He was captured during the siege of the Smolenice castle and there he met castellan’s daughter Iľka. They fell in love with each other, but girl’s father gave them a strict condition – they could get married only if Ocskay leaves the ranks of rebels and surrenders to the emperor. The young man asked for some time to consider and after several secret and amorous meetings near the Raven Rock, he finally accepted castellan’s condition. It seemed that nothing could hinder the happiness of the young couple. However, Ocskay was kidnapped by Rákóczi’s soldiers and brought to the main rebel camp in Nové Zámky, where he was executed. The news of his death was brought to Iľka who every day of the following year mourned her beloved at the Raven Rock until she dies of grief.
