Seven Churches

Life of the Hungarian palatine Nicholas Eszterházy is associated with the construction of Trnava University church. It is connected to the death of seven subjects, who were hanged by the order of Count Esterházy. It happened while mowing meadows of the local nobility, when the eldest mower was unable to work anymore, the taskmaster flogged him. Other mowers attacked this taskmaster and were beating him when the carriage of Count Eszterházy passed around. He did not let them explain the whole situation and sentenced all of them to the death by hanging. During the execution, the eldest of mowers cursed him and later, the Count was pursued by one disaster after another. He lost a son, daughter and wife, and so full of grief and pain, he asked God for forgiveness. He confessed his sins to the Archbishop of Trnava and promised him to build seven churches. He kept his promise and he dreams his eternal dream in the crypt of the Trnava University church, which was built as the last of seven promised churches.
