Schiffer, William

The medalist, sculptor and visual artist, who was born in the village Zvončín, was a member of a sing group already as a young boy. At the same time, he also went in for amateur theatre; however, at the end of the World War II, he left Slovakia for France. It was there that he got acquainted with a daughter of the painter, Oskar Kokoschka, with whom he got married. He managed to open his own atelier in Montmartre, Paris, where he actively worked on his creations. Together with Pierre Dehay, he established in France the movement called "Obnova medaily". It was movement attempting to revive the fame of old mint masters. He actively cooperated with Paris Mint and his coins were prized at several events. Schiffer created also commemorative coins for the most significant anniversaries. After his return to Slovakia, he cooperated with mint in Kremnica and created commemorative medals of Milan Rastislav Štefánik, Václav Havel and many others. He exhibited his works at several authorial expositions. At the occasion of his eightieth anniversary, artist's own anniversary exhibition took place in Paris. He died in Trnava.
