The significant Slovak playwright, journalist and Catholic priest. He was born in the village Raková and studied theology in Esztergom, Bratislava and Trnava. Ján Palárik worked as a chaplain in Starý Tekov, Štiavnické Bane, Banská Štiavnica, and Pest. Since 1862 until his death, he held a position of a parish priest in Majcichov. At the same time, he was a great defender of liberal attitudes what caused that he came into conflicts not only with a conservative party from the city of Turčianský Sv. Martin, but also with Church officials. He is a representative of the so-called New School advancing cooperation with the Hungarians. Together with Jozef Karol Viktorín, he published the almanac “Concordia” representing a collective manifesto of Catholics and Protestants. In his theatrical works, he followed the tradition of the writer Ján Chalúpka. He is the author of three comedies: “Inkognito”, “Drotár” and “Zmierenie, alebo Dobrodružstvo pri obžinkoch”. Apart from these texts, he wrote also the tragedy based on Russian history - Dimitrij Samozvanec. However, he was interested in theoretical aspect of drama as well, what can be proved by his published article – “Dôležitosť dramatickej národnej literatúry” defining pillars Slovak theatre should follow.
