Oláh, Mikuláš

The archbishop of Esztergom and humanist scholar, who spent his youth in Transylvania, in his hometown Sibiu. Later on, he started to study at the university in Oradea. Thanks to his family connections, he won favour of Jagiellonian dynasty and cooperated with the king Louis II, who died tragically during the Battle of Mohács. After the defeat of the Kingdom of Hungary, he moved to Brussels, where he got acquainted with Erasmus Roterodamus. Since 1553, he was the archbishop of Esztergom, however, the king moved his seat to Trnava due to the impending Osmanic danger. Several years later, he became a governor of the Kingdom of Hungary, which was the highest position in the Kingdom after the one of king. In 1566, he established a seminary in Trnava and wrote a book about history of the Kingdom of Hungary - Hungaria, which was very popular that time and focused on the territory of his homeland - Transylvania. Through his notes, he attempted to complete decisions of the Council of Trent. Mikulás Oláh died in Trnava, where he was also buried. His gravestone is situated in St. Nicholas Basilica.
