Natural Beauties of Smolenice Surroundings

Smolenice is the centre of the area under the Little Carpathians and a weekend relax destination for Trnava people as well as the inhabitants of Trnava surroundings. The surroundings of the village have a number of natural attractions and several marked hiking trails. The starting point of the trip around Smolenice is in the village centre. Take the second-class road from the Municipal Office southwards in the direction to Horné Orešany. Všivavec a protected area with rare plants and animals is on the left from the road. Before reaching Horné Orešany, turn right from the main road to Horné Orešany water reservoir and towards Majdan settlement. Turn left after getting at the road crossroads. Lošonský háj natural area lies on the left off the road with several rare and protected plant species. The most significant sight of Lošonec, a small village under the Little Carpathians, is the Roman Catholic Church of St. Anna. The tour continues from Lošonec north-eastwards back to Smolenice. At the beginning of the village, in the part of Smolenická Nová Ves, the route turns left to Jahodník recreational centre offering accommodation and board, swimming pool, campground and horse riding. The basis for the cottage settlement creation was the discovery of Driny Cave, the only cave in the Little Carpathians accessible for the public. It can be reached following the yellow trail from Jahodník. Use the same route to get back to the centre of Smolenice, from where another natural attraction can be visited. It is Hlboča Gorge, a canyon valley with the only waterfall in the Little Carpathians, which is 9 m high. The gorge can be reached from the village, taking the blue trail. Visits to Smolenice are most often connected with Smolenice Castle and a beautiful natural park surrounding it. However, admiring natural beauties of Smolenice would be incomplete without an ascent to Záruby (767 m), the highest mountain of the Little Carpathians. Its peak can be reached taking four alternative trails. The trip to the surroundings of Smolenice can also include a walk in Smolenice Carst Nature Trail, which enables us to become familiar with the most of natural wonders of this part of the Little Carpathians.
