Malatinský, Anton

The significant Slovak coach and football player born in Trnava. He started his career as a midfielder in the football club Rapid and later, he played for ŠK Bratislava, where he won two titles of champion of the republic. He represented Slovakia six times, while Czechoslovakia ten times. In 1956, he suffered an injury and had to give up his career as an active player. He started to couch the team of "bílý andeli" with whom he won five titles of league champion. Anton Malatinský was a significant coach, excellent strategist and pedagogue, who did not need any assistant. He intensively studied foreign literature and put the latest football techniques into practice. Among other achievements of Malatinský, we can mention his participation in the semifinal of European Champion Clubs' Cup against Ajax Amsterdam taking place in 1969. He coached a quarterfinal of championships of 1937 - Derby Country and 1974 - Dózsa Újpest twice. Despite of his coaching abroad, he is still the record holder in the number of coached league matches (538 matches). He was called "Toni-báči " or football magician from Trnava. He died in his hometown Trnava. He became the Citizen of Trnava of the 20th century, in memoriam, and the Trnava football stadium is called after him since 1998.
