Louis I.

As the Hungarian king, he ruled between 1342 and 1382. Originally, Louis, the son of Charles Robert, was not a successor to the throne; however, he inherited the sceptre due to death of his two younger brothers. He was crowned king at the age of sixteen. At the beginning, he was ruling together with his mother Elizabeth. Owing to unsettled inheritance relations, he was forced to go to war against the Kingdom of Naples. However, according to available sources, it is a well-known fact that during his reign, he was at war almost permanently. He added Dalmatia to the territory of the Kingdom of Hungary. The home gentry forced him to renew the Golden Bull, what proved its extensive privileges. Louis I founded a lot of monasteries and also the first university in the Kingdom of Hungary located in Pécs. In 1381, he granted the Slovaks from Žilina privileges thanks to which they acquired equal number of seats in the city council as the Germans. In 1360, Louis I met with the Roman and German emperor and Czech king, Charles IV, and Duke of Austria, Rudolph IV, in Trnava, in order to discuss their mutual disputes. He also had his own mansion built in Trnava, where he died in 1382.
