Ján Koniarek Gallery in Trnava

About the Gallery: Ján Koniarek Gallery is named after an acclaimed Slovak sculptor who lived and worked in Trnava. The gallery exhibits works of fine art of the 20th and 21st centuries by artists from Trnava, but also those active within the European scene. Since 1922, Ján Koniarek Gallery has been situated in Koppel villa, a former landowner’s mansion. A scholarly library containing numerous rare and interesting publications is a part of the gallery as well. The gallery is also the main organizer of an international poster competition called Trienále plagátu Trnava (TPT). Permanent Exhibitions: SCULPTOR JÁN KONIAREK –the founder of modern Slovak sculpture: In 2002, the gallery opened a permanent exhibition of Ján Koniarek’s sculptural work, which formed the foundations of modern Slovak sculpture and significantly influenced the cultural life of Trnava and Slovakia. It contains about 60 of Koniarek’s works and it is situated in the newly built extension of Koppel villa. With the exception of marble sculptures the gallery allows its visitors to touch the works, which makes the exhibition unique in Slovakia. JEWELS OF HOME – 20th century classic Slovak art: The exhibition introduces the gallery golden fund from the period between 1900 and 1960 in the form of paintings and sculpture. In individual sections, it presents classic contemporary motives and genres, from interwar period to the post-war generation of the Galanda group. Particular attention is paid to the influential regional artists and sculpture art. PORTRAIT GALLERY: This permanent exhibition is situated in the entrance area of Koppel villa and it has presented a selection of portraits representing the development of portrait art since the end of the 18th century. The exhibition displays a collection of the best portraits from the deposits of the gallery and focuses on authors who worked in the region or were born here.
