Tour of Trnava Churches

The tour is a walk of the most significant churches in Trnava. The starting point is the Trinity Square in the town centre. Follow the eastward direction from there and after a few metres, you are standing in front of the most important Baroque building in town – the Church of St. Anne (Ursuline Church). The most valuable monument of the interior is Classicist main altar with a painting of St. Anne with Virgin Mary. Turn left at the end of Hviezdoslavova Street and go along Hollého Street to get to one of the most valuable sacral sights in town – early Baroque Cathedral of St. John the Baptist (University Church). The gem of its interior is a colossal wooden altar from 1640. The church used to be a part of university buildings. They included a college, grammar school, seminars and boarding houses. Take the eastward direction along Invalidská Street to get to Jeruzalemská Street and turn right to St. Nicolas Square, where the Gothic Basilica of St. Nicolas is situated. It was the Esztergom Archbishop´s cathedral between 1543 and 1820. The extended chapel houses a “miraculous” painting of blessing Virgin Mary. Kapitulská Street runs southwards from the church along the eastern fortification and finishes at the former Church of the Assumption of Virgin Mary (Clarist Church) with a monastery, nowadays used by West-Slovakian Museum. Dolné Bašty Street takes us westwards to a rare architectonic sight with Gothic elements – the Church of St. Helena (Hospital Church). One of the most interesting elements of the church built in the half of the 14th century is a three-part Gothic aedicule with sculptures over the church entrance. Take Hlavná Street northwards in the direction of the Town Tower. Short Trhová Street digresses from the pedestrian zone in about halfway, joining Paulínska Street close to the Church of St. Joseph (Pauline Church). Calvinists had it built as a Protestant church of atrial type in Renaissance style and it commemorates the era of Reformation. The tour of Trnava churches can be finished at the Trinity Square, only a stone´s throw from other two churches. Short Divadelná Street leads us to the Church of St. Jacob (Franciscan Church), which is joined to the Franciscan monastery buildings. In the immediate vicinity of the Square, in Štefánikova Street, there is the Church of the Holy Trinity (Jesuit Church) with the main altar of the Holy Trinity and a spacious Chapel of St. Joseph.
